The note describes a small excavation at Champagne Castle, Drakensberg, in a painted rock shelter. The excavation revealed two levels. The upper horizon contained potsherds possibly of Basuto origin and of no great age. The lower Stone Age deposits contained Smithfield N and Wilton artefacts. The paintings on the shelter wall included polychrome eland and red paintings of figures and smaller buck.
