The publication of SAH is subsidized by the KwaZulu-Natal Museum. While a non-profit endeavour, the high cost of producing the journal means that some cost-recovery is necessary to ensure continued publication. To this end, SAH offers access to individual articles through a payment process.

Individual articles may be purchased at a cost of ZAR 45 from the journal's website. This pricing is aimed at scholars within the southern African region (SADEC), where the fluctuating exchange rate with the USD makes it prohibitive to sell in that currency.

SAH is also offered as part of the SABINET suite of journals. Institutions and internationally based scholars are encouraged to use that portal to access SAH.
