The Great Galleon São João: remains from a mid-sixteenth century wreck on the Natal South Coast

Abstract

Material remains are described from a European shipwreck which on the ceramic evidence is dated to about 1550. The records of Portuguese shipwrecks indicate that this was the São João which was wrecked in 1552.
